When I first saw blood I thought I had just brushed too hard, but then it happened again the next day. I also noticed that my gums seemed a little swollen. At my dental checkup I was told that my gums were receding and that if I didn’t start flossing every day it could easily turn into gingivitis.
I went to Google and looked up the symptoms for Gingivitis. They included:
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.
- Receding gums.
- Swollen or puffy gums.
- Tender gums.
- Dusky red or dark red gums.
- Bad breath.
It seemed that my dentist was right. If I didn’t start taking better care of my teeth I was going to be in big trouble. Both of my parents had several implants, so I had seen firsthand how painful and expensive those were. Not something I wanted to go through.
According to conventional medicine this is what I was supposed to do:
- Use Antibacterial Toothpaste. It can help fight plaque all day and night, long after you’ve completed your oral hygiene routine.
- Brush your teeth more effectively. Make sure you brush for 2 minutes, 2 times every day.
- Use an Antibacterial Mouthwash.
- Floss daily.
Ok. I hate flossing, so I bought a Waterpik. I also bought an Oral B electric toothbrush and switched to an antibacterial toothpaste. I chose that particular toothpaste because they claimed it was the most thoroughly tested toothpaste in history and it was FDA approved. I began brushing both day and night instead of just at night and I used Listerine after brushing at night. My teeth felt amazing. In fact my entire mouth felt cleaner than ever. I thought I had solved the problem.
Bigger Problems
A couple months after starting my new routine, I noticed that my mouth was watering a lot. At first I just found it odd, but then it began doing it to the point of being annoying. I also noticed that my tongue was sore. It was especially noticeable when I ate anything salty or acidic. That’s when I noticed a crack down the center of my tongue which hadn’t been there before.
Neither my doctor or dentist were concerned when I brought up my symptoms at my annual checkups. Cracked tongues can be annoying, but they rarely cause any serious issues, I was told. But I couldn’t stand the way my tongue and mouth felt.
Since I had been involved with nutrition and supplements for years, I knew that long term use of antibacterial products could cause serious problems. So I quit using antibacterial toothpaste. I also started reading about how using mouthwash on a regular basis destroys the microbiome in your mouth. I felt that the combination of antibacterial toothpaste and mouthwash had probably killed of all of the protective bacteria in my mouth. Within a few weeks, my excess salivation stopped but my tongue remained sore and irritated.
An Amazing Discovery!
I was searching for a way to replenish the good bacteria in my mouth, so I started drinking Kefir before bed and taking probiotic supplements, but the results seemed to be very limited. It wasn’t until I ran across the following video presentation that I found the solution I had been looking for. It’s an oral probiotic that tastes like peppermint and you just let it melt in your mouth while you are falling asleep. After using it for 3 weeks, my mouth felt amazing! My teeth and mouth feel as clean as they did when I was using the antibacterial toothpaste and mouthwash, but now it’s something that will be sustainable.
